Preprints

JATM accepts manuscripts already published in preprint from platforms considered reliable by the editorial committee. These must be informed in the Open Science Compliance Form, which must be submitted as a supplementary file to the manuscript.

Peer Review Process

The authors' names will be maintained in the manuscript during the peer review process. However, according to the Open Science Compliance Form, they may follow open review, which allows the reviewers to interact directly with the authors.

The manuscripts will be received by the assistant editors, who will initially verify the similarity of the content (plagiarism) using the Similarity Check/iThenticate system. A Section Editor (SE) will be assigned for manuscripts with no or low similarity content. The SE will appoint 2 to 4 external evaluators (ad hoc referees). After receiving the evaluations, the SE must give a decision about the manuscript addressing the evaluator's recommendations. The SE can accept the manuscript in the form it was submitted; it can reject it or request revisions.

The manuscript that requires revision will be sent to the author, who is supposed to submit a new version and a letter to the Editor, where each recommendation of the evaluators should be commented. The additional paragraphs should be highlighted. If the author disagrees with the evaluator's suggestions, it is necessary to explain the reasons.

After verifying the adherence to the recommendations in the new version, the SE should give the final decision or, exceptionally, send it to another evaluation round if the changes have not been sufficiently addressed.

The entire process is available to the authors in the system at any moment. If the authors disagree with the final decision, it is allowed to appeal on the decision by sending an email to the Executive Editor, who will review the process and ask for reconsideration to the Editors in Chief, if justified.

The name of the Section Editor is published in PDF version of the paper.  The identification of the reviewers' identities may be published if allowed after consultation.

Open Data

The manuscripts must cite all other content underlying the text to facilitate and promote understanding of the research, its peer review, reproducibility, reuse, preservation and visibility. Therefore, before or in parallel with submitting manuscripts, authors must make available the underlying content in a data repository or more than one in the case of different types of files and content. Authors can keep these files closed until the article is approved and published. They may also request to keep them closed after publication for reasons the journal may or may not accept. It must be stated if data sharing is not applicable to the article, as no datasets were generated or analyzed during the current study. Research data includes, but is not limited to, raw data, processed data, software, algorithms, protocols, methods, and materials. Visit re3data.org to help identify registered and certified data repositories relevant to the subject area.

The author responsible for the submission must inform us whether the manuscript cites the data, software codes, and other materials underlying the articles. If so, the respective URLs must be informed; otherwise, the author must justify himself. For this, authors should inform in the Open Science Compliance Form, submitted as a supplementary file that will be accessible to peer reviewers;

Editors and referees are requested to check the availability of data, software codes and other materials according to the journal's evaluation guide.

Fees

The correspondence author will be asked to contribute to the Article Processing Charge for all accepted manuscripts.  The value is fixed per article, independent of its length and is R$ 800,00 (in Brazilian reais) or U$300.00 (in American dollars). In exceptional cases, the editorial board may waive a contribution upon reasonable request.

Ethics and Misconduct, Correction and Retraction Policy

JATM is committed to the best practices on ethics in the management of manuscripts, which involves editors, reviewers and authors and adopts the "SciELO Guidelines on Best Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication", "Principles of Transparency and Good Practice in Academic Publications" recommended by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), and the guidelines of  Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), and the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA).

Additions, Corrections, and Retractions may be used to address critical issues or correct errors and omissions of consequence arising after an article's publication. Articles that contain seriously flawed or erroneous data such that their findings and conclusions cannot be relied upon may be retracted to correct the scientific record. Additions, Corrections, and Retractions may be requested by the author(s) or initiated by the Editor after discussions with the corresponding author. Readers who detect errors of consequence in the work of others should contact the corresponding author of that work. All Additions, Corrections, and Retractions are subject to approval by the Editor, and minor corrections and additions will not be published. The corresponding author should obtain approval from all the article coauthors before submitting Additions, Corrections, and Retractions or provide evidence that such approval has been solicited. Additions, Corrections, and Retractions will keep information about the original article title, author list, and the reason for the retraction. The originally published article will remain on the web except in extraordinary circumstances.

Policy on Conflict of Interest

If there is any conflict of interest regarding the evaluation of the manuscript, the author must send a declaration indicating the reasons so that the review process occurs fairly. The conflict of interest may be personal, commercial, political, academic or financial. Conflicts of interest may arise when authors, reviewers or editors have interests that may influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts. When submitting the manuscript, authors are responsible for recognizing and disclosing financial or other conflicts that may have influenced the work. More information is available at Disclosure of Financial and Non-Financial Relationships and Activities, as well as Conflicts of Interest.

Gender and Sex Issues

JATM observes the gender equity policy in forming its editorial board. If applicable, the Sex and Gender Equity in Research—SAGER guideline should be used to report information about sex and gender in study design, data analysis, results and interpretation of findings.
